New immunotherapy treatments for childhood cancer are producing promising results in young patients—and hope for families all over the world. We have the beginnings of the science, but we do not have the science yet. We did not have the science for Ewan, who passed away on May 7, 2018 just 18 days after receiving CAR Ts. It is our hope that one day the science will exist for all those who need it. Welcome to Strong Against Cancer, a team effort that includes doctors, nurses, researchers, hospitals, companies, and people like you who are supporting this medical breakthrough.
In this type of treatment, blood is withdrawn from a patient. In a specially developed manufacturing lab, technicians re-program the blood’s T cells. These cells are trained to attack enemy cancer cells. When re-introduced into the patient’s body, the T cells multiply rapidly, seeking out and destroying cancer cells -- without harming normal, healthy cells, and without the negative effects of radiation and chemotherapy.
We are currently at 91% remission rate for patients with relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This is not enough. This therapy is a successful last line of defense for many, but does not work for everyone. We need funds to keep improving this treatment and to bring it to more young patients. Every donation makes a difference. Please make your gift today. (Your gift here will be credited towards the Team Ewan guild that is being set up at Seattle Children's for more long term fundraising efforts.) Please check with your employer to see if your employer matches donations.
